Choose to Believe

Blog – 2-15-17

This week as we continue our journey through the songs on my new CD, let’s take a look at “Choose to Believe.” It’s the song that goes along with Step 2 which says, “We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”

I learned something very important when I went through my divorce. I was struggling with forgiving my ex and was worried I would end up bitter. I tried praying about it, but my prayers felt phony. I felt the seeds of bitterness starting to take root in my heart, and I knew I did not want to go there. I was trying so hard to forgive, but my feelings weren’t going along with me.

A good friend said something to me one day that literally changed everything for me. She assured me that all I had to do was make the decision to forgive, and God would do the rest. Wow, that sounded easy!

I wasn’t 100 percent sure it would work, but I knew I absolutely had to give it a try.

So one day I actually did. I went to God in prayer and told Him I was making the choice to forgive and I needed Him to do the rest. I didn’t know how I could possibly get past this, but I trusted Him to show me how. I didn’t wait until I FELT like forgiving. I simply made a clear, conscious decision to forgive, in spite of my feelings.

It wasn’t overnight. It wasn’t like I miraculously felt no ill-will about my situation at that exact moment, but over time true life change started to happen. The hurt I was feeling began to lessen. Conversations I had with my ex became easier and easier. I quit rehashing things again and again in my mind. When bitterness started creeping in, I reminded myself of the decision I had made.

God worked a miracle in my heart!

Sometimes real, lasting, forever change starts with the simple step of making the choice to believe God can and will change us.

Choosing to believe that we are lovable, even when we don’t feel like it.

Choosing to believe that we can forgive someone who has hurt us deeply, even when the wounds are still oozing.

Choosing to believe that God’s grace covers all of our mistakes, even the BIG ones!

God’s truth says I am forgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ. It’s up to me to choose to believe that truth.

Life is full of choices, and sometimes we have to choose to believe differently until our feelings start to agree with truth.

Rachel and I worked hard on the lyrics to this song, and I think they say it better than I can. Please read them and let me know what you think!

Choose to Believe
Words and music by Rachel Barrentine and Jill Miller ©2016

I’ve let the stuff of this world steal my identity
So I wander around in my insanity
I fill the void with all the wrong things
No wonder I fall apart when the waves come crashing in
I’m like a pillar of salt, and I’m crumbling
Tattered and busted, about to drown
Come build me up from the inside out

I choose to believe in Your word when you tell me I matter
I choose to believe You will restore and love me forever
Today I will ignore the lies I listened to before
As I sink into the sea of Your truth
The choice is up to me and I choose to believe

Your hope is opening doors, and so I’m walking in
Your freedom’s waiting inside, no matter where I’ve been
Your grace is getting under my skin
I’ve made up my mind to follow, no looking back
I know that total surrender is where it’s at
You loved me even when I was lost
You nailed my brokenness to the cross

I choose to believe in Your word when you tell me I matter
I choose to believe You will restore and love me forever
Today I will ignore the lies I listened to before
As I sink into the sea of Your truth
The choice is up to me and I choose to believe

Believe in Your goodness
Believe You are faithful
Believe You are always in control
Believe in Your Promise
Believe You are able
Believe You will call me your own
The choice is up to me so I choose to believe

I choose to believe in Your word when you tell me I matter
I choose to believe You will restore and love me forever
Today I will ignore the lies I listened to before
As I sink into the sea of Your truth
The choice is up to me and I choose to believe

Hugs and love,

Jill
